Don't Look at Me

I hate it when you look at me.
I'm not as pretty as you thought.
If you look a little too close,
I'm afraid I will be caught.

My strength can be fleeting,
my mystery is thin.
If you break it you won't want me
like you used to want me then.

Heart beating like a drum,
just a little too fast.
If I can't keep my distance
your desire will not last.

At one glance I may be lovely
yet when your eyes see to my core,
you'll see something tainted
and you won't want anymore.

Kneeling in the shadows
in which I choose to hide,
the fear that locks me there,
dancing with my pride.

I cannot help but need you
for in truth I am so small
and worse than looking at me
is when you do not look at all.
