Dream Ending

Dream Ending

She tiptoes painfully
Through open meadows,
Inhales the relieving shadows of forest
Laying her cheek against
The fissured skin
Of conspiratorial trees

One day and the next
He does not come
Does not come.

She watches her golden forest
Peel itself into memory,
Pressing her fingers
Into bloody crescents
Against her pulse,
As if she had the power
To stop breathing time.
