Evanescent Footfalls on a Shattered Causeway

The bridge still breathes in hollow sighs,
Each step dissolves, each echo dies.
The stones beneath are thin as mist,
Yet whisper truths the past has kissed.

A lover’s voice, a fleeting face,
Still lingers here, but leaves no trace.
The path is dust, the air is thin,
The past won’t break, yet won’t begin.

What once was real is now unsure,
A dream too worn to still endure.
Yet even as the echoes wane,
The heart retraces loss in vain.

And so I walk where none still tread,
Where footfalls fade but grief is fed.
This road forgets, yet never leaves—
A path of ghosts the soul believes.

This Poems Story

Background: This poem explores the fragility of memory and the way loss imprints itself onto the landscapes of our past. The \"shattered causeway\" represents a path to something or someone that no longer exists, yet the speaker still treads upon it, unable to let go. \"Evanescent\" means fleeting or vanishing, mirroring the way each step taken is both an attempt to return and an acknowledgment that return is impossible. The poem suggests a lost love or a moment that was once real but now exists only in echoes. The final lines emphasize the paradox of grief: though the road itself forgets, the heart refuses to.
