Eyes of the Moon

Tonight I stare into the eyes of the moon

My greedy hands reach out to touch
And yet no touch is to be received
For no mortal with fingertips
As callous and abused as mine
Shall ever rest upon the smooth surface of the divine
And so my eyes must touch in their place
Caressing every curve of grace and godliness

My tongue dares cheat a taste
And yet in no such act shall I relish
For no mouth as foul and laced
With childish hopes and cruelties as mine
Shall ever meet the lips of the omniscient sky
And so my eyes must feast in its place
Chewing every glimmer of beauty
And swallowing my inferiority

Tonight I stare into the eyes of the moon
Eyes as deep as the dark caverns of the Earth
Tonight I stare into the eyes of the moon
Hoping one day they might stare back
