I am a father
But what, exactly, is that
Let me ask my dad

A gift for all time
Every day is father’s day
In my children’s eyes

I celebrate you
Grateful heart bursting with joy
My beloved children

Up on my shoulders
You surveyed your vast domain
Altitude, my job

Every pain and tear
Mine to bear personally
Your loving guardian

With vigilant eye
I stand back, out of the way
My work mostly done
In sunlight, your wings spreading
I have taught all that I could

I wait quietly
As grandfather, not so tall
Heart at the ready
A place on my shoulders still
For yours and my legacy

When my days pass, know
I will love you forever
My solemn promise
