First Love

This was a first love, a first warm encounter
That we found

Like the newborn breath of a baby
Sweetly cherished
Like the gentle laugh of her sister
As she sways her skirt across the lawn

This was a new and wondrous time
That we created together

Or perhaps it had been there waiting
For us, waiting and cheering us on
And the town seemed not to exist
For a while

As though we had breathed in a different sphere
This was a first love, a first warm encounter
That we enjoyed

Like the back of a curious dog's head
Or the weight of a father's arm across a child
Like a soft, soft touchdown that a bird will make
Hardly known, hardly seen or heard
