For Aniol

I asked for my lover at her house,
But she was nowhere to be found.
I went up and down the street,
Knocking at doors, putting on dumb shows
Of my yearning. They drove me out
As a man without mind.

I asked for my lover at her house,
But the house had collapsed in dust.
I went up and down the world
Asking, Have you seen my lover?
I made strange faces and played many tricks,
For images of my most dire despair.
They drove me out as a demented man.

I asked for my lover in the desert ...
I trekked all the desolate reaches.
Beside still waters,
In shade, beneath a palm,
I found my lover waiting.
She rose, she took me to her house.
