For Love of Nilda

He was a college professor, educated and well-paid,
Then on-line he met Nilda, beautiful Queen of the Mermaids.

And on the occasion of her gala undersea coronation,
Against all common sense, and causing great consternation,

The eager teacher invited himself, dove in, and swam down.
Beguiled by Nilda, he stayed too long and nearly drowned.

Dejected and desperate for her affection, he swam to the top;
But try as he might, the ache in his soul simply would not stop.

All wet and nostalgic, this instructor of science at N-Y-U
Finally returned home to the big city, deeply forlorn and blue

To endure year after year a peculiar lovesick yearning,
For even today, the fire she lit in his heart continues burning.

Time couldn't extinguish the fever with which he had been smitten,
For there is no antidote to cure those who are love-bug bitten.
