For Women Who Stay

You are a beautiful tree
Your limbs tower over him
Crushing his shadow

Your roots dig deeper
Than the scars left by the
Knife wounds of his words
On your bruised and battered heart

You come at his calling
When he's bored and lonely
When there's no one else

But you exist
Even when
He doesn't need you

You are not a doormat
To his home
When will you learn
That you can't make
Homes out of humans

Was it your mother
Who taught you to
Stick around when suffering

You are a lion
And he tries to tame you
Silencing your roars
