Forever Home

You picked me up, and I whined
You promised to love me so
And at that moment, it was clear
That I'd found my forever home
Our first night together, how I cried
But you stayed patient with me
You gave me food, water, and hugs
And taught me to go outside to pee
As I got older, I got too large
To sit on your lap while you read
But when you sat on the couch
You'd still give me a place to rest my head
I grew out of my puppy stage
And a woman began coming around
At first I was jealous; then I heard you laugh
And of course, that's my favorite sound
Years passed, and we became a little family
I would have never traded our time
I hope I had a place as big in your hearts
As you always held in mine
One day, I began not to feel well
You were both worried for me
I tried to reassure you two with kisses
My wonderful, loving family
My time was up, but I knew I didn't go alone
A piece of you both went with me, to my next forever home
