Forged by Vimy

Bruised, battered and broken upon the hill
spring chill gripped their very soul
maple leaf soldiers with iron will
charged, eager to pry this once green, grassy knoll
behind the lines thunder boomed
a moment of calm, then fire fell
bravery over fear, victory loomed
a nation of young men rising through hell
on that ridge a nation was born
an identity was forged in fighting for wars to end
remember this sacrifice while the earth was torn
many lives lost for countries to mend
the true north, strong and free since that fateful fight
believing in a cause that was right
