Frantically Fleeing

starry blue eyes
light brown hair
mysterious and deluded
dreams of a man falling from the sky
longs to feel free
but she can't

middle of the night
a steady stream of rain
it falls like her footsteps
one after the other
in the old dreary apartment
a door slams open
dark oak wood dresser
messy drawers

it's a heavy skirt
keepsake corduroy
her nails run across it
making a faint noise
the buttons line up the front
like forgotten children
lining up for class
her hands reach the buttons
she holds them tight in her bare hands
reminding her of something she doesn't have
