For Douglass

Enslaved to the voice of my master
Do better
Be the best
Get to the top
I fought back but death came and found me
It was war but there was no blood
Only illness to my mind and heart

The privilege my friends had
When they disobeyed
When they fought back
They won
But I always came back
I was lost

But he found me
Prayed to God
Hid under his wings
The cruelty left me
It was over
just like how it’s supposed to be
