freshwater mermaids

i am a freshwater mermaid
typical, overused, and washed out character
once the deepest desire of every little girl's heart
now a monster in the company of medusa
the kind of personality
that has no personality
a phantom in the crowd
overlooked, unappreciated, discarded
but don't think you have me all figured out
aren't mermaids supposed to live in the ocean?
you are so concerned
about my being a mermaid
you forget i am freshwater
you fail to know a single thing about me
am i the little mermaid
or the lock ness monster
a ghost
or just a mystery
