Full Emptiness

It isn't loneliness
It isn't homesickness or fear of change or upheaval
Or the gentle hands of a higher power
It's that feeling
That moment
When you return to a place you used to love
But haven't seen in a long while
A place where ghosts live as memories and you are one again
All at once belonging
At home but lost
At peace but unsettled
Welcome but unrecognized
When you feel the part of your heart that houses that place –
Or perhaps that place which houses that part of your heart –
Awaken but another part of your soul grow empty in its stead
That is the feeling I fear
For home,
But most of all
For the people I love most
That one day
They will be no more than the ghosts of memories –
Grayscale where there once was a rainbow
Fondly remembered but quietly abandoned
As life moves slowly forward
Never looking back
