Ladies in Waiting

Waiting in the quiet house,
Vapour ladies on the glass,
Gather and knit their lacy wings,
An attendant angel scrum,

They are the white witches
Of the christening,
The cool compress
In the labour room,

Grandmother spirits,
Seeped from cool tombs,
Here for the hatching.

I feel them as I lumber through the house,
Peering kindly from the walls,
And in the park,
Soft footfalls,
Of these ghostly guardians follow.
