Grad Life

With big-eyed dreams and hopes
I came to the USA
Laundry, Cooking, and Taxes
I’m prepared, it’s a cakewalk, I say

You’ll be partying my friends said
You’ll top the class my parents assured
Though none told me to carefully tread
Can independence sometimes feel unsecured?

Surprises came in, some sweet, some bleak
Burritos and bagels were yum
Although I saw many places mystique
A part of my heart always yearned for my fam

Dollar to rupee conversion never stopped
Assignments piled up every night
Coz of super challenging courses, my confidence dropped
As days passed, the struggle for an internship was nowhere light

Tune your elevator pitch, they said
Polish your resume, and don’t forget
Network, network your way ahead
Finally bagging an internship, I had no regret

Small things kept me going in these sharp turns
Be it delicious food or an unplanned trip
A comforting book or a glimpse of the Flatirons
Stopping now and then loosened the grip

If I had read some tea leaves or tarot card
And got to know what’s awaiting out there
I would have taken this path, though hard
For it made me fierce and flair

Graduating now with an exciting job
It’s time to turn the pages
I’ll proceed without any guesses
How else will I know what I am capable of?
