Gummy Bear

The hospital room is dark, dreary
as if the heavy clouds looming outside
had made their way in

I have to occupy my time
and my thoughts
with other things
homework
a sudoku from the newspaper my grandpa brought
even reading the newspaper itself
my 8-year-old brother, however
did not think to bring something to entertain him
his emptiness
filled with the idea of a bag of gummy bears
from the vending machine in the lobby

he begged my dad to buy them for him
promising to pay him back
he wanted them so badly
i bought them for him myself
and i watched him occupy his time
and happiness
with the gummy bears
until the bag was all out
and the emptiness
returned once again
