Hallowed Waters

Hallowed Waters

O, watch the wretched waters wave.
With frosted crests and frowsy gloom,
Against the empty shore they lave.

Forgotten home of dreams we gave,
Whispered—soft!—to salty plume.
O, watch the wretched waters wave.

Swollen clouds hold sunshine slave.
As broken waves form holy room,
Against the empty shore they lave.

Swirling currents fill the nave
With pews of shells and hoary spume.
O, watch the wretched waters wave.

We pray the sea our souls will save.
While in our sleep the waves consume,
Against the empty shore they lave.

Now let us rest in silken grave,
With sodden cross and sunken tomb.
O, watch the wretched waters wave;
Against the empty shore they lave.
