Hattie, Oh Hattie

Hattie, oh Hattie
How your milk has run dry
Just as your duty, your promise
Clearly you lie
Awake at night wondering
How you could best
Torture your baby and
Not ever rest
Inflicting more grievous injustices each time
All the while, singing
A sick, sad nursery rhyme

Hattie, oh Hattie
When will the screaming cease?
In your bed, in your head
And where you expect it least
Your shame and guilt behind you
You outran every bit at last
But, Hattie I must remind you.
You cannot outrun your past
