Have You Ever Held A Memory?

Have you ever held a memory?
Try it if you can-
Breathe it out from your heart,
and catch it in your hand.
It feels as you remember it,
Familiar are the smells;
Yet what you feel is but smoke,
Though it rings so many bells.

Have you ever loved a memory?
Try it if you must-
But only try for a moment yet,
it is loving only dust.
It feels as you remember it,
Familiar is the flame;
But the smiles are only echoes of smiles,
In the valley of their name.

Have you ever lost a memory?
Try it if you dare-
Do not let it go if yet unsure,
For it disappears in thin air.
You won't feel as you remembered it,
Familiar nevermore;
You'll be just as it'd never been,
Though never as before.
