Heart

What is left, when you are gone
Is something I can only ponder for so long.
Bleak is the future, gray and without song
Is all that remains when you are gone.

What is left, when you are gone
My hollow shell once taught with brawn.
Like a dark night, without the saving grace of dawn
Is all that’s left when you are gone.

What is left, when you are gone
Are dense shrubs in a disheveled lawn.
A courageous heart, crying out with a yawn
Is all that’s left when you are gone.

All that remains, when you are gone
Is a sketch of my future, ready to be drawn
Far downriver, where the young salmon spawn
I loathe the day, when you decide to move on.
