Hmong daughter

By Star

How can I be myself?
When all you do is try to shape me to be like you,
How can I be the perfect Hmong daughter you want?
When all you do is teach me to be like you.

How can I be myself?
When all you do is try to teach me to be like my mother,
How can I be me?
When all you do is teach me how to be a Hmong daughter.

How do I live my life?
When all you do is prepare me to be a Hmong wife,
Don't do this, don't do that… you say,
But have you ever ask me about my…day.

How do I find the power inside me?
When all you do is teach me how to obey boys around me,
Don't put up a fight you say,
As my voice doesn't matter.

How can I play both roles?
As a Hmong daughter and as an American student,
How can I be washing rice and doing my homework late at night?
Am I living my life?

I am your daughter,
And you will always be my father,
Daydream or Reality,
I'm still living my parents dream.
