Homegrown
I thought I had planted small seeds of myself
Within the warmth of your skin,
And I foolishly perceived that I had lost them
As you continued to grow,
And I shrank beneath you,
Losing myself in the wonderful world that was you.
But with time, one must realize
That as reptiles shed their skins for new,
We are infinite.
The parts of ourselves we give so trustingly to others
Are not lost but simply wasted.
For the only fields
Where our flowers may truly flourish
Are our own.
Within the warmth of your skin,
And I foolishly perceived that I had lost them
As you continued to grow,
And I shrank beneath you,
Losing myself in the wonderful world that was you.
But with time, one must realize
That as reptiles shed their skins for new,
We are infinite.
The parts of ourselves we give so trustingly to others
Are not lost but simply wasted.
For the only fields
Where our flowers may truly flourish
Are our own.
