Hostage

You have not entered my mind in a long time.
So long that when I finally think of you again
It comes as a shock.
a flash of lightning in a clear sky.
Memories of you take my mind hostage.
It has been so long since I remembered
That time you took us camping,
Or all the times you brought home fresh fish.
And how I would sit and watch you
Bleed them out and cut away at their insides.
Until they were hollow.
I forgot how much I used to love you.
That I never really stopped.
As thoughts of you take over I remember,
Me,
a little girl
Standing in the corner of the kitchen
Watching my sister cling to your leg
And you shaking her off
Like a dog.
