How to Love and How to Stop

This is how you crave,
With both eyes open,
Hands clasped in scared prayer,
Lips parted, gasping for a God
You're not even sure you believe in.

This is how you hold yourself together,
Arms wrapped around ticking time bomb parts,
Mind whirring like clockwork,
Your heart a metronome,
Trying to sync itself with the one
You care for.

This is how you should let go,
Carefully and painlessly;
Try not to shatter yourself
On glass,
Don't let the animal that
Rages in your breast go wild.

This is how you leave;
I'm writing you precise instructions
Into the palms of your hands,
Let go and leave.
It's time to grow your love
Where it can get some sunshine,
Not in graveyards and dusty shrines.
