I am from..

I’m from the dozen apple pies
Baked every thanksgiving
And from the searing hot pans
That left me with burns, and an emergency room visit

I’m from the relief on my mom’s face
When she tells me that we were finally getting away
And I remember the last dinner we had together
I’m from that rose that was painted on my plate
I’m from the last night I got to see him
Staring as he stood in the rain
I’m from the rearview mirror that I looked into
watching as he grew further and further away

I’m from the cold Canadian waters
Of the lakes that taught me how to swim
I’m from the deep array of forest
And tree branches that drew scars on my skin
I’m from that mystic moonlight
that peaked through the leaves
I’m from the haunting, hazy nights
When in depths of the forest was the only place I wanted to be
