I Am Not Your Friend

If I was your friend, I would let you stay up all night.
But I am not, I am your mother.

If I was your friend, I would let you date any boy you wanted.
But I won't, I am your mother.

If I was your friend, I would encourage you to not do your
homework and to hate school.
But this is not acceptable, I am your mother.

If I was your friend, I would give you advice that you only
wanted to hear.
But I could only give you honest advice because
I am your mother.

If I was your friend, I would say your parents are too strict.
This may be so because I am your mother.

When you need a shoulder to cry on and your friends are not there,
it is I who will hold you because I am your mother.

When you grow up and have children of your own, I will then be
your friend because that is what mothers do.
