I Am Something to Many

I watch the blue jays
Come to me to get
Shelter from the sun's rays.

I see the cardinals come to me
And mate, to build a nest--
A home for them and their
Young to rest.

I am here to shelter and protect
A cat from a dog.
At my feet, I see a cat corner
A frog.

I let your children climb inside
Of my huge sprawling arms.
To them I am filled with pirates,
Ghosts and many other charms.

I am here to protect and shelter
And house many.
My spirit lives on in many lives.
I am the one hundred-year-old
Oak tree standing here in your yard.

This Poems Story

My inspiration, looking at an oak in my front yard for 30 years. The birds fly in and out. My 3 children grew up playing in it. I'm married to a contemporary poet whom is also published. Must say, he got me started. I moved from Arizona, Yuma, to Texas. Now a Texan by choice. I'm so thankful, my husband Joe had such faith in me.
