I Am Yours and You Are Mine

I hold you here in my arms, how fragile I know you are
I couldn't bear to be apart, nor even very far
For I am yours and you are mine, partners we shall be
Together forever is what we face, an inseparable dog and flea
For you are small compared to me and I will guard you carefully
And though there is only so much time, I am yours and you are mine

To switch our roles is hard to bear
But I love you even without your hair
And though you've turned pale I couldn't love you less
Because my mommy is an eternal princess
Even through your aches and unbearable ills
You always seem to have the will
And despite the chemo you say you're fine
Because I am yours and you are mine

I hold you here in my arms, how fragile I know you are
Because you say you'll love me always, no matter how near or far
But I am not ready for you to leave, though no one really is
Seeing my tears you wipe them away with a special "mommy kiss"
You look in my eyes and, lovingly, you say, "Always remember this,
Together forever is what we face an inseparable dog and flea
For you were small compared to me and I have guarded you carefully
Though there is only so much time, my heart knows it will all be fine
My love for you can never die, for I am yours and you are mine"

This Poems Story

I wrote this poem out of love for my mother. She was diagnosed with stage three aggressive breast cancer on September 27, 2013. Thankfully, she fought with all her strength and her faith and is in remission. In some ways this poem is an outreach to all those fighting the same battle and to all the children who wish there was someone who understood the pain of having to watch the light of their world fade. This is a message to say you are not alone and miracles can happen.
