I Gave Till I Could Give No More

I gave till I could give no more
Said I to the girl with bucket and bell
Who stood outside the department store
Telling people of God and Heaven and Hell

I gave till I could give no more
Said I to the beggar on the street
Who rattled his tin cup at the market door
Waiting for change to get something to eat

I gave till I could give no more
Said I one day to a homeless girl
She said you can still give one thing more
It takes love to rebuild the world
