I Have a Heart Black as Coal

I have a heart black as coal waiting to be crushed into gold

Even the best of friends can't make it stop;
Your own voice is stronger than anyone else's,
But you don't realize until you're flat on your back
shocked by the pain of pure self-loathing.

Someone come slap me or tell me I've made a difference;
Either way, I won't feel anything.
I won't feel anything at all.

I've been stoned by the choir enough times to know
That even when you try your best
Someone will always say you've failed.
But how do you tell them to stop singing
When you play all the parts?
