I left my home back there

I left my home back there
When I ran for my life
I ran and ran and ran
Until I could no longer run
No sooner than I stopped
Did I look back and remember
I left my home back there
I left my home of violence
Of long nights and even longer days
Of piercing screams and broken glass
Tattered souls and careful dances
Wired teeth and heartless hands
I left my heart back there
On the floor still faintly beating
Bruised and battered
Beautifully engraved with tears
Made from poisoned lips
And bleeding eyes
But my head turned
And I looked back no more
For my feet knew the danger
my mind seemed to forget
And my skin burned of the agony
My eyes refused to regard
Yet still
Whenever I laugh or smile
The empty hole within me
Reminds me
I left my home back there
