I need to be stable

you ask me a certain question
nothing comes to mind
no words come out of my mouth
I need to be stable
I am complacent
impatient to realize what it is you want me to say
the thought dances around in your pupils as you wait for a response
I need to be stable
the stove is on
it’s no loss for either of us
I can feel the burn from the stove
I need to be stable
the scars simmer in the winter
sting in the summer
I’m crawling under my charred skin
I need to be stable
I turn the stove on again to forget
I need to be stable
I need to be stable
I need to be stable
