I Remember

I remember the ones who paid the price
I remember who gave it all for another
I remember the sacrifice and the more I live
I remember more the cost of my brothers
I remember it's not my parents that are without a son
I remember it's not my wife and child who share a house with no one
I remember it is not my life that was cut short way too soon
I remember too many hopes and too many dreams never to come true
I remember the friendship I remember the pain
I remember the laughter and the tears
I remember what I said in anger
I remember what I didn't say over beers
I remember the screaming I remember the anguish
I remember the courage and the fear
I remember the medic, the bandage, the Humvee, the panic
I remember collecting bloody and scattered gear
I remember those who lived because their brother died
I remember their eyes going so cold
I remember the anger I remember the hate
I remember the bloodlust screamed out so bold
I remember the rifle stuck between the boots
I remember the dog tags and the kevlar top
I remember wanting to remember their faces forever
I remember trying to forget

Still I remember
