I Should Have Been There

I should’ve been there
But was miles away
An excuse this I know
But a truth it must stay.

Once there hung a void
But now it’s been filled.
Yet, the pain that you bear,
I gladly would steal,

And add to my own
My own personal guilt
Now I have to atone,
For letting you wilt.

If I could’ve been there
You would not have been hurt
But I failed in that task,
And now lay in the dirt,

You shall never again
Have something to fear,
I shall be your protector
I will always be here.

I shall guard you forever
For never again
Will I allow it to sever,
The love that has been

So weak yet so strong
But now it shall be
An unbreakable bond
Between you, between me

I am so sorry baby,
If only I’d known
But now that I'm here
You are never alone.
