I Sit in Silence

I sit in silence.
I nod my head.
My lips curve into a smile with no meaning.
You think I'm listening.
Your voice drones on.
Your words are like knives, so demeaning.
I have to keep smiling.
I can not speak.
My hands are still, my heart is careening.
Inside I am crying.
I am banging my fists.
“Just leave me alone," I am screaming.
I sit in silence.
I nod my head.
My face is vacant, my heart is teeming.
I will not speak.
I will keep smiling.
You ignore me, as always, unseeing.
