I Was Born

I was born on a Thursday at Lenox Hill Hospital
New York, New York
A country entangled

In problems of climate change
And school shootings
And cancel culture
And inequality

I was born not long after
or that far away
from a time
where my grandmother
was not allowed to play sports,
to experience the high
of zipping through defenders
or slamming a sizzling shot into the back of the net.

I was born into a world where
people interact more with a screen and fantasy
than with real life.
Blooming flowers,
Grassy meadows.

I was born not long after
The first school shooting.
Two people.
Two guns.
13 lives.
20 wounds.
Our lives forever changed.

I was born in New York
But the problems of the world
Creeping like the traffic,
Seeping into my soul.
