I Was Here

Even if I took off that necklace,
Would I be free?
Even if I left behind all the jewelry,
All the dresses and makeup
That were used to hide me,
Would the chains be lifted?
Although they all viewed me
As a work of art,
Someone who was only a cover
And not a story,
I kept my lips close together.
I kept the door of my soul locked.
Although my words went unheard
And the tears I shed were collected
As diamonds and gold,
I stood my ground,
And made sure they knew of my existence.

A girl who was stuck between reality
And a dream she yearned to reach for,
Who was she in this sea of sharks?
