I Was Late
I woke up with a start.
I had to pry myself off the bed.
I was stuck.
The illusion was broken.
The light was not here.
Fear gripped my chest in a vice.
I could let air escape
But didn't have the capacity to let any in.
Sounds of disarray,
All I held sacred was in trouble--
Rising tide of trepidation.
The dead greeted my heaving body.
I was hoping that I would be rewarded
With a renewed and cleansed soul.
I was late.
