I Was There

I Was There
By
Eric D. Hodges

I was standing there next to the man at your door
When he told you your husband died in Iraq
And he's not coming back any more
You couldn't see me, but I knew the news of my death
Tore you in two; with my son in hand, how were you
Gonna make it though, I wanted to wipe your tears
And tell you have no fear, but I had no way to
Tell you I was here, and as my son looked on
The man gave you a flag and said my truck took on
Enemy fire and that my body took all it could
withstand
And as he put the flag in your hand, he said I died
Like a man, but I saw in your eyes you didn't understand
God's plan, it was just two months prior to my final
hour I gave you
A wedding band, but I was there with you and you
Didn't know it, I wanted to tell you I love you
For all the times I didn't show it
As the man left and thoughts of my death hit home
All I wanted to tell you was even though I'm
Not there with you, you're never alone
