I Willed Myself

I willed myself to look you in the eye and pretend
we're equals. Knowing you are never as good as me.
As I am never as good as you.
We are different.

I willed myself to catch your puny bids to scratch
the surface of my skin. And hold them at bay
where they ought to stay.
But you're relentless.

I am the master of my art.
While you have mastered your skill.
Our forces blend and box in the shadows.
I shun the very thing that held me together
and danced the night away.
Into the pit, towards the unknown.
You chased after me as I plunged deeper.

I willed myself to feel out of touch while euphoric
chords can be heard playing at dusk.
They sound discordant.
And we're left to stare at each other's strength.
Knowing I shall never give in.
And you shall never surrender.
