If I Asked A Simple Question

If I asked a simple question
would your answer be sincere?
Or would you just appease me
with the words I'd like to hear.

Or maybe you would lie to me
safe words aren't always true
Perhaps I shouldn't ask
because I don't know what you'll do.

Should I ask you if you love me?
Do I really want to know?
And if, indeed, you love me
would you ever tell me so?

Or maybe you would laugh at me
then turn and walk away.
Perhaps I'll remain silent
just to dream another day.
