In the Middle of the Lilacs

In The Middle Of The Lilacs

The minuscule toad
Sits, unbalanced, on the rim
Of the glistening rock, coated in
Slippery moss,
Eyes boring down at the hole of
Immeasurable water.
Its sticky hands are knotted
Into the grass, and it
Hates the water,
Hates the pit in the middle of the
Lilacs, where he sleeps
And plays and
Wanders. An intrigued
Look spreads
Across his face; he is
Interested in the water hole
And, with a “plop”,
He stumbles into the deep, dark
Impossible pond.
