Independence

My shoes touch the ground beneath me
I hear the music playing
My heart beats peacefully,
Along with it
To the common eye I walk alone
But my soul rejoices softly
And quietly
Enjoying your presence.

One step, than another
I feel the calming rhythm, through every part of me
I smile
The sun breathes warmth and
Illuminates my face
I feel it.

Decisions hurriedly make their way to me
I must make them myself
Who can make them for me?
Leaving those I know and love
To reach an unknown destination
I'm scared, frightened, terrified in fact
My heart is now racing
My feet hastens their pacing
But I know who I am and, I can not, must not,
Run away from what I am facing.
