Ineffable

I knew what it was to be black before I knew what it was to be human
I knew what it was to be woman before i knew what it was to be equal
I knew what it was to be marginalized before I knew what it was to have freedom
I knew what it was to be heartbroken before I knew what it was to love myself
I knew what it was to be ignorant before I knew what it was to be woke
I knew what it was to follow before I knew what it was to lead
I knew what it was to starve before I knew what it was to be full
I knew how to follow curriculum before I knew how to follow scripture
I knew what it was to die before I knew what it was to be born again
I knew what it was to hate myself when I realized others hated me
I knew how to fake it before I no longer could
I learned how to use my pen before I learned how to breathe
I knew I was someone else before I became me
I knew what it was to be nothing, which made me realize I was everything
