Innocent Eyes

Innocent eyes see innocent things
Oh how I long to be young and ignorant again
Not a care in the world- not a chip on my small shoulder

Christmastime was gay
Smiling faces meant happy people
But how life's course has changed me

Fracturing souls hide behind forced grins
tensions holds the presents under the tree
and Mother's hands are clasped tightly together
protected from a shunned husband's grasp

Brutalized eyes see brutalized things
And the runner who doesn't want to win this race
Can't turn back to let the other's take the prize
