Everyone just pretends here.
We share a version of what's inside,
But behind barriers built of fear
We all have infinite secrets to hide.
From the young girl hiding her secret crush,
To the Whore who hides her name.
The Mother hiding her endless mistakes
Or the Author hiding her name.
All of us just pretend here.
We let our true thoughts go to waste,
But with them go the best of us
As we hide everything in our haste.
And so we lose the freedom
To stand up proud and say "guess what?
This is what I think and feel,
I don't care if you like it or not!"
We each sacrifice our courage,
For different reasons, too many to list.
But time moves quickly, soon we'll be gone
Only the memories we leave still exist.
Yet we all just keep pretending.
Keep our secrets locked inside.
When it's too late, then we'll ask ourselves
What the hell we had to hide...
