Key

Walking down the alley to the road that bears all
I saw myself change along with the trees in the fall
You said you would wait and love me until the dawn
But you flew away and the time trawled on much too long

The names have changed but the meat tastes the same
So I ran and I ran until I couldn’t keep warm from the rain
Every day brings new life and death for the progression of the rest
It is too bad that they weren’t best to keep me safe in their nest

How was it when you lost?
How did you scream when you got caught?
I stood and stared at the stars in the sky
And left you some honey to keep you dry

So many days have passed since I saw your face
How lovely you were in that mess of a daze
Forgive and forget the trials we’ve struggled to mend
Because the new day will give you a new love to send

I broke down a few times and licked the wounds myself
I did not have help from any timely nurturing motherly elf
I had nowhere to go, and the money was much too slow
So I walked straight down that alleyway without any bow

How was it when you lost?
How did you scream when you got caught?
Stare at the sky and wonder why
The only honey that is left is much too dry

The warmth resides in the darkest depths of her soul
And to score a ring is to face the heat of the coal
I will never forget the care that gave me the will to try
For I will be the one to show you how you’re meant to fly

How was it when you lost?
How did you scream when you got caught?
The time is now to let it die
And free the laughter so those won’t cry
