Learning How to Breathe Again

By Mel B

Gray dust coated my windows
The sunlight felt like a stranger now

My voice was a whisper in the hall
Each morning a heavy, slow stone
Carried uphill with aching breath

The mirror showed a blurred stranger
Eyes holding shadows deep and cold

Then a small crack appeared in the wall
A sliver of unexpected blue light

I turned toward that gentle warmth
Letting go the weight I had kept close

The air smells crisp like rain now
My own laughter echoes freely

I walk the pavement with firmer steps
Discovering colors I forgot existed

This skin fits better than before
Truly breathing this honest air
